Thread specification

Look up basic thread geometry from a common designation.

Static screening only. Joint geometry, fatigue, tightening variation, and applicable specifications require separate checks.

Understanding basic thread dimensions

A thread designation identifies nominal diameter and pitch, but the mating surfaces depend on more than the outside diameter. Pitch diameter describes the size at which thread and space widths are equal in the basic profile. Minor diameter describes the root or crest boundary, depending on whether the thread is external or internal.

Basic geometry is not a tolerance limit

This tool calculates basic dimensions for the supported 60-degree thread profile. It does not supply every tolerance class, allowance, coating adjustment, or inspection limit. Use the specified thread standard and class when deciding whether a manufactured thread passes inspection.

Check the complete designation

Confirm pitch, thread form, handedness, and any class or fit requirement before ordering a mating part. A matching nominal diameter alone is not sufficient. Use these dimensions for understanding the geometry and preliminary layout, not as a substitute for a production thread specification.

Reading major, minor, and pitch diameter together

The major diameter describes the largest diameter of the basic thread profile. Pitch diameter lies between the major and minor diameters and is important to how the thread flanks mate. A caliper measurement across external crests therefore cannot establish every aspect of thread fit. Two threads can have similar outside dimensions while differing in pitch or flank geometry.

The profile equations use pitch as a length. When a thread is specified in threads per inch, convert that spacing correctly before applying a metric form of an equation. The basic profile is a geometric reference from which actual manufacturing limits are assigned. It is not a measured-size target for every internal and external thread. When preparing a drawing, specify the complete thread designation rather than copying a calculated minor diameter alone. When checking an existing part, use suitable thread inspection methods and the specified limits. Wear, coating, lead error, and form error are not resolved by this basic-dimension lookup.
